Landowner Referred (referral period closed)

Referral Number: 016-26-10

*Site Visit Date: 1/15/26

*Location: Cheboygan County, Mullett Twp, T36N R02W

*Buildings: None

*Parcel size: ~35 acres

*Soil Types: Predominantly Blue Lake loamy sand, Riggsville loamy sand, and Croswell sand.

*Water Bodies/Wetlands: None

*Road/Access: Access along one side from a paved county road.

*Cover Types: 2-aged forest dominated by aspen, red oak, and white pine. Smaller components of hemlock, red pine, striped maple, red maple, and beech. A harvest around 2007 removed mostly aspen and red maple, leading to a one small stand of aspen and good white pine regeneration throughout.

*Landowner Objectives: Complete a selection harvest to improve game species habitat and continue to develop the long-term value and quality of the forest. Many of the red oaks are declining and showing dieback in the crowns, so removing those declining individuals and promoting oak regeneration is a goal. Advanced oak regeneration is poor. Landowner may be interested in a Forest Management Plan and the Qualified Forest Program.

*Landowner Timeline: Flexible.

Referral Number: 071-26-18

*Site Visit Date: 6/12/26

*Location: Presque Isle County, Ocqueoc Twp, T36N R03E

*Buildings: Several houses and outbuildings generally outside of harvest area

*Parcel size: Multiple parcels—cooperating landowners. Currently ~75 acres. Potentially up to ~160.

*Soil Types: Mostly Deer Park and Croswell sand. Some Rubicon sand.

*Water Bodies/Wetlands: A river runs along some property boundaries, outside of harvest area.

*Road/Access: Improved gravel road access to all properties. Very close to US-23.

*Cover Types: Large, mature jack pine dominant (relatively good quality, for jack pine). Approximately 8” average DBH. Varying densities of mature oak (mostly red oak). Some mature aspen.

*Landowner Objectives: Fuel reduction harvest. Harvest all merchantable jack pine and aspen. Generally retain oaks, white pine, and red pine. A break-even harvest is an acceptable outcome for the landowners. Harvest would be at least ~50 acres, possibly as much as ~100+ acres.

*Landowner Timeline: As soon as possible, but landowners recognize the need for flexibility. Landowners may be interested in a long term management plan and the use of prescribed fire for habitat and fire risk management in the future.

Referral Number: 016-26-13

*Site Visit Date: 6/1/26

*Location: Cheboygan County, Mentor Twp, T34N R03W

*Cover Types: Stands dominated by mixed pine-oak, northern hardwoods, and hemlock.

*Landowner Objectives: Manage the land for long-term forest quality and health. Some interest in game species habitat, but looking for good management overall. Interested in a thinning of the mature pine-oak stand and potentially some of the northern hardwoods. No management in the hemlock stands.
